Tuning, installation, refurbishment
Individuality is the engine
Rich sound, bold design, shining eyes. Germany's motorcycle community are enthusiastically waving spanners around and giving their favourite two-wheelers extra power. Anything goes as long as it complies with the road laws – Road Traffic Licensing Regulations.
Goose bumps made to order
The catalogues of the accessories industry are as thick as telephone books. You can find the right tuning part that meets nearly every wish. In order to ensure your safety and environmental protection don't fall by the wayside when fine tuning, the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) require corresponding safety certificates. TÜV NORD Mobilität assists you with your tuning work. Sure thing.
Test certificates: Safety - signed and sealed
With these certificates, you'll be driving on the safe side:
- Technical component report (TGA)
- General type-approval for vehicle components (ABE)
- General component type-approval (ABG)
- EC or ECE approval
- Amendments or excerpts from the vehicle homologation
Test certificates contain installation instructions as well as restrictions and requirements. Many tuning parts are only approved for specific vehicle types listed in the test certificate.
Competence without being a killjoy
Your health is irreplaceable. After tuning parts have been installed, our officially recognised experts and test engineers check whether the parts were correctly installed on your vehicle and meet the specified restrictions or requirements. We confirm the proper installation or mounting with the "mounting certificate“.
For general type-approval of vehicle components (ABE) or general component type-approvals (ABG), you do not require a modification acceptance inspection, unless the authorisation explicitly requires you to do so. If this is not the case, you can put the ABE / ABG along with your other vehicle documents and everything else in your pocket. If a modification acceptance inspection is required, you must drive your car to the experts or test engineers without delay after the tuning part is installed.
You generally do not need a modification acceptance inspection for parts with a EC or ECE authorisation. It is best to have the authorisation documentation or the installation manual together with the vehicle documents. Always make sure to keep them in a safe place.
Part combinations similar to fire and water
Tuning measures can adversely affect one another. Make sure that when buying tuning parts that the authorisation of the part combination is expressly stated in the test certificates.
When is an individual acceptance inspection required?
You want more individuality? You want to combine several tuning parts together that interact without the corresponding authorisation in the test certificates? You are the proud owner of a unique vehicle that was custom-built or modified just for you?
In these cases, an appraisal is required by an officially recognized expert according to § 21 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations. Consult your expert for advice concerning extensive modifications in advance to find out whether the planned tuning activity is subject to authorisation and what appraisal costs you must expect.
Have amendments entered into the vehicle documents immediately
Have your vehicle documents amended immediately after an individual acceptance inspection. To do so, you must submit the expert appraisal to the registration office.
For modification acceptance inspections, the mounting certificate always contains the information on whether the vehicle documents must be immediately amended or upon your next visit to the registration office. If no immediate amendment is required, you can simply keep the mounting certificate along with the vehicle documents.
Insurance coverage
Your car insurer may consider increases in performance or other extensive tuning measures as an increased risk. Therefore, you must always report increases in performance to your car insurer, even if your vehicle is not placed into a higher performance class category. In case of extreme chassis modifications, such as a lower suspension setting in conjunction with extra wide tyres, we recommend informing your car insurer in advance so that your insurance protection remains intact in any case.
