The Highway Code made simple

325 Traffic-calmed area

The so-called Play Street has been available for a while, but not all drivers are sure how to behave here.

  • You must drive at no more than walking pace.
  • Pedestrians can use the entire width of the street; children are allowed to play anywhere.
  • Drivers must neither endanger nor obstruct pedestrians and, if necessary, must wait.
  • Pedestrians must not obstruct traffic unnecessarily.
  • Parking outside the designated areas is not permitted apart from getting in and out of vehicles and loading and unloading.

The term "walking pace" is not accurately defined by law. According to various court rulings, this speed is between 4 and 7 km/h. The Federal Court refers to it as considerably slower than 20 km/h.

Leaving a traffic-calmed area is comparable to leaving a private plot: You must not endanger others and there is no right before left.
