The Highway Code made simple
No alcohol behind the wheel
Since 1 August 2007, the new zero milligram blood alcohol level for beginner drivers has been in place in Germany. The total alcohol ban applies to all drivers under twenty-one years old, regardless of whether they are still learning to drive.
Nil milligrams, no problems
If you are caught drink-driving, expect heavy penalties:
- a fine of between 125 and 1,000 euros
- Two points on your driving licence
- Enforced rehabilitation sessions
- Extension of the probationary period by a further two years
If you cause an accident or endanger other road users while possessing an blood alcohol level of 0.3 milligrams or over, you will be faced with not only a substantial monetary fine, points on your licence and a driving ban, but also confiscation of your licence .
- Over 0.5 per milligram generally entails a driving ban, even if nobody is endangered or injured.
- Over 1.1 per milligram (unfit to drive) entails driving licence confiscation.
