Hazardous substances
Airborne germ measurements
Microorganisms (e.g. fungi, bacteria, yeast) occur naturally in the environment. In addition to many useful functions, certain microorganisms can cause illnesses among employees in the workplace. Thus, considerable concentrations of microorganisms can be found in workplaces in the waste management sector, especially molds in the air, which can be a problem for the health of the employees.
For every professional activity, where personnel might be exposed to materials having considerable concentrations of microorganisms (biological substances) a risk assessment must be carried out as prescribed by law: This serves to assess the risks to employees and to define protective measures, if necessary. The basis for this is the EC directive "Protection of employees against risks posed by biological substances" and the biosubstances ordinance.
Airborne germ measurements are carried out within the scope of the risk assessment. The results are evaluated as per the technical guidelines or as per the latest science and technology. When increased values are found, hygienic measures are required in the areas that were examined.
We are experts in the field of airborne germ measurement and we can offer you solutions from a single source through our many years of experience and comprehensive expertise. We carry out the special biological tests working closely together with experienced biological laboratories.
What services do we offer?
- Our measurement centre conducts "on-site" airborne germ measurements on your behalf and determines the mold and bacteria concentration.
- The results are evaluated and compiled by us in an exhaustive appraisal.
- We develop the recommended solutions for you and create a catalog of measures for reducing or eliminating the exposure, if needed.
What standards and legal regulations form the basis of our work?
EC directive 90/679/EEC "Protection of employees against the risks posed by biological substances" has been implemented into national law in the biosubstances ordinance (BioStoffV) dated January 27, 1999 (last revision Dec. 2008). The requirement for a risk assessment for any professional activity involving exposure to biological agents is described in § 7 BioStoffV.
The measurement strategy and sampling is in line with TRBA 405 (Technical Rules for Biological Work Substances). Determining the germ load as per the BIA workbook (TRBA 430, indices 9420 and 9430) is supposed to result in an orientating overview of the germ load in the work areas to be examined.
