Wind potential calculations and yield reports
On both a large and a small scale
Wind appraisals include modelling wind potential maps and forecasting the energy yield. They can be based on data from official weather stations or data measured at the location. In these cases, yield data of wind turbines near the site serves as a reference. This method is used everywhere where there is already a high information density, such as in Germany.
Wind appraisals can also be based on global climate data that, for example, contains information on the upper wind levels (geostrophic wind). This data is used to calculate available wind potentials near the ground. The evaluation of the calculated wind fields can be carried out using wind measurement data near the ground and reference wind turbines; whereby their locations must not be located in the direct vicinity of the project to be analysed. Here, larger distances are preferable to allow the inclusion of regional mesoscale effects. This method is always suitable if information on the climate or winds near the ground is available, but was ascertained at relatively far away measuring points.
